Longtime Commitment and Cooperation of State Workers Keeps Blood Supply Flowing It may not be a well known fact that Florida state workers contribute over 40% of the blood drawn in Leon County, but the ongoing dedication of the volunteers with the Florida Department of Revenue-Child Support Enforcement, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation, and the Dept. of Children and Families, proves it. All four of these agencies work in close quarters at the Northwood Center complex, and about every 8 weeks, they work together to round up blood donors. Volunteers from several different state agencies coordinate the Northwood Center blood drives. Leading by ex-ample, they are the key to the success of the blood drives. Each, in their own way, make sure that blood donation is conveyed as a highly valued community service in which employees are encouraged to participate. The last drive, held on a very hot August 14, saw 46 donors through the bloodmobile doors!

Tom Mims, Program Specialist with the Dept.of Education, displays the Silent Hero plaque awarded this year. Tom was recently a donor at another location, but volunteered to become the chairperson at the Northwood Center office.
Jo Moore, Personnel Services Specialist with the Dept. of Children and Families, helps encourage donations among her group by targeting current blood type needs.
Mollie Shepard, with the Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation, takes care of nitty-gritty details like the bloodmobile’s parking space! She is an avid recruiter of new blood donors.
