Sororities and Fraternities Get into the Spirit of Giving
PROJECT AMERICA is the first philanthropic event of Greeksgiving, a newly formed group of sorority and fraternity members at Florida State University. The group's president is headed by Michele Gustavson and was formed to provide a noncompetitive philanthropic outlet for the Greek community at FSU. Greeksgiving's first project was to sponsor the bloodmobile at the FSU Campus on four separate occasions and to provide refreshments, advertising and local media coverage of the blood drives. Their drives were held on October 10, October 31, November 7 and December 5 during the fall semester, and netted a 33% increase in donors, compared to non-sponsored blood drives at FSU. The participants received a patriotic pin designed by the group and food donated by generous Tallahassee eateries. A Project America banner and information on blood donation made the display at their table colorful and informative. They also collected donations to assist the New York Police and Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit fund. The group members who had toured the blood center and spent time with the Recruiting Department staff at SCBC were well prepared to recruit donors. Greeksgiving is a good example of Greek Life members working hand in hand with community-based organizations to reach goals to better serve the needs of the community. Hats off to Greeksgiving!
