Burns Funeral Home Hosts Perry Community Blood Drive

What do hamburgers, hot dogs, a radio station, the EMS, the Sheriff Department, and a Funeral Home all have in common? The motivation to save lives, that’s what! Tommy Murrow had a vision to team up Joe P. Burns Funeral Home with the Taylor County EMS and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Dept. and host a blood drive April 28 at Doctors’ Memorial Hospital. The idea behind the event was to show the Perry Community how important blood donation is, but at the same time show folks how much fun it can be as well. Donors got to enjoy a delicious lunch from the grill and walk away knowing they saved, potentially, the lives of 3 people.

The groups that sponsored this drive spent a lot of time promoting it throughout the community, by posting flyers, telling their friends and family, contacting the local newspaper, and putting an ad on the radio. Mr. Jerry Allen was present at the drive, along with his WQLC 102.1 FM van, talking up the drive and asking everyone in listening range to come on out. The many hours these guys spent sponsoring a blood drive means a lifetime to many patients in this community.

A total of 31 people came to the blood drive that day and 24 pints were collected. Thanks to Mr. Murrow and the kind folks at Burns Funeral Home, EMS, and TCSO for making this life-saving event possible. A big thank you also goes out to those who donated blood. Because of your big hearts, patients in your area are given a second chance and you make it possible for life to go on.
