The Family That Donates Blood Together Stays Together

Father and Son Compete for “Fastest Draw” Title

Chip Collette (r) and his son Daniel (l).

Chip Collette, a long time blood donor who has donated over 100 times, donated alongside his son Daniel M. Collette earlier this year. Actually Chip and Daniel had a "blood donation race" to see who was the "fastest draw." Would Daniel, the young Air Force Academy Senior, or Dad Chip, baby boomer and seasoned donor, prove to be the fastest draw in the east?

Well, to the dismay of strapping young Daniel, Dad won the race hands down. At the time of the duel, Daniel was home on leave from the Air Force Academy. Daniel's first introduction to donating was when his Dad first brought him to the blood center soon after Daniel's 17th birthday. Daniel will graduate from the Air Force Academy, May 2002, as a second lieutenant.

One of the challenges the blood center faces is getting younger people to donate. As the baby boomer generation "matures" and the WW II generation donors pass away, families who need blood will depend more and more on young people to become regular blood donors. We need for young donors to continue the blood donation tradition. And remember, even though Chip won the duel, both father and son saved lives.
